The Vega de Ario —Ario’s mountain meadow— is located in Asturias, at Picos de Europa National Park’s western massif, also known as the Cornion massif. This drop-dead gorgeous natural enclave is where the mountain refuge was built and a place to marvel at one of the best sights of Picos de Europa National Park’s central massif (Urrieles massif) and its most iconic summits: Torrecerredo (2.648 m.), the highest peak in the National Park; Llambrión (2.642 m) and Tesorero (2.570 m).
An hour and thirty minutes hike from the refuge will take you to the top of Jultayu’s mountain (1.940 m), an impressive viewpoint 1.500 m above the famous Cares gorge. Some other easy-to-reach peaks from the refuge are Cuvicente (2.015 m.) and Verdilluenga (2.130 m).
The easiest route to Vega de Ario is hiking from the Covadonga lakes. Another common route goes up through the Canal de Trea, a steep mountain track with a positive elevation gain of 1.200 m.
